We just learned that a classmate of ours, Freddie Shelton, has passed away in Arizona. Freddie is probably most familiar to those of us who attended Magoffin Junior High. Freddie was a relatively quiet guy whose passions included baseball and basketball. He was such a baseball fan that when one of his favorite teams was in the World Series, Freddie would find some way to miss school and stay home to watch the game on television. Freddie's family moved to the Parkland High School attendance area after our sophomore year, so he didn't graduate at Irvin with the rest of us. However, Freddie was taking advanced mathematics classes that Parkland didn't offer, so he would still come over to Irvin to sit in on an advanced math class so that he could continue his math education. After high school, Freddie enlisted in the Army. Freddie came down to Austin to visit me once in my junior year at UT, so we hung out, cooked bbq and went to the movies. We discussed our contrasting experiences--Freddie living the military life and my living the college life. That was the last time that I saw Freddie. His obituary stated that Freddie was owner of a successful accounting business, so it appears that he was able to put his considerable math skills to good use in his civilian life. He left behind a wife of 38 years, numerous children, grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
So sorry to hear about his passing. Every person that passes away leaves behind many broken hearts. Someday we will understand. I pray his whole family will be at peace. May Jesus bless them all.
